A home first, and good care inside it

Sarah Whitfield spent four years caring for her grandmother at home before she opened Juniper Lane in 2014. She wanted a place that felt like that house did: familiar faces, cooking smells in the afternoon, and someone who notices when a person is having a quieter day than usual. Every resident has a care plan, and every care plan starts with what that person likes about their mornings.

A registered nurse who lives the routines

Sarah is at the home most days and writes each care plan herself, then goes over it with the family every three months or sooner when something changes.

Six residents, never more

Four private rooms and one shared room. Caregivers learn how each person likes their coffee, their music and their quiet hours.

Meals cooked here, from a real garden

Raised beds and a small greenhouse out back supply lettuce, beans, herbs and far too many zucchini every August.

Care that fits the person

Help with bathing, dressing, walking, medicines and meals, with nurse delegation for the tasks that need it. The home holds Dementia and Mental Health specialty designations on the state record.

Mom had stopped eating much at the last place. At Juniper Lane she sits at the big table, argues about the salsa and asks for seconds. We got her back.

Days with a shape to them

Mornings in the garden or at the table with the paper, a walk to the mailbox after lunch, music on Thursdays, and a family dinner on the last Sunday of each month.

    Who runs Juniper Lane

A nurse-owner, her brother who keeps the garden and the gutters in order, and a small team of caregivers who speak English, Spanish and Tagalog between them.
